CLASSIFICATION / DECLASSIFICATION

GET provides government agencies with certified derivative classifiers and declassifiers to review information in conformance with applicable laws and regulations. Technical services in the areas of document classification/ declassification review include classification and control guidance support, policy and procedures development, training and appraisal support, and general administrative support to the US Department of Energy, Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the United States Navy.


Types of reviews include:

  • Initial classification determination (such as pre-publication reviews)
  • Bracketing [such as Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) or Privacy Act requests, litigation, mandatory declassification requests, and referrals from DOE programs and other Federal agencies]
  • Survey/audits of other Federal Agency record collections at the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA)
  • The formulation of the legal and regulatory bases for classifying and controlling sensitive Restricted (RD)/Formerly Restricted Data (FRD) information under the Atomic Energy Act
  • Development and revision of classification and control guidance that identifies classified nuclear weapons–related information that must be protected as RD, FRD, or National Security Information, and similar sensitive unclassified information, such as Unclassified Controlled Nuclear Information.

Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Support Services

GET provides FOIA declassification program support, Our personnel have functional area expertise in the FOIA Act (Title 5 U.S. Code, Section 552); declassification reviews, Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI), information security; software applications, and redaction process. Requests by public persons and news media organizations are filled in accordance with agency guidelines, whereby GET conducts research, analysis, and recommendations in support of initial FOIA/Declassification requests, appeals, and litigations documents. GET also supports the Department of Defense by providing declassification functions and security, technical, analytical, and research.
